Office of Outreach Activities (OOA)
IIT Kanpur
Placement Policy 2024-25
The placement policy will be applicable to all the eMasters degree students of IIT Kanpur interested in registering for
placement. OOA placement session is followed typically for one year. Placement activities performed by the Office of
Outreach Activities (OOA) are a service extended to support graduating students and do not carry any guarantee for
securing a job opportunity. The support is mainly for the early career starters.
Eligibility & Registration
Registered eMasters students of IIT Kanpur who have given the exams for all 12 modules and are
expected to complete their requirement for the degree within that quarter are eligible to register for
current placement services. Graduation is a prerequisite for students to be eligible for placement.
Exceptions for this are listed below.
Students sponsored by an organisation must produce a No Objection Certificate from the
concerned authorities/agencies prior to registering with OOA.
With-holding of information from OOA will result in the cancellation of registration of these students.
Disciplinary actions as per OOA/Institute guidelines will be initiated against these students.
As of now, there is NO placement registration fee for the eMasters Students. However, registration is compulsory
to avail benefits of the placement service. The details of the registration process are mentioned below.
Students can participate in placement services extended by OOA only once, within one year of their graduation
from IIT Kanpur. Placement registration would be valid for one year and one quarter after registration. One
quarter would be used by the OOA placement team for the verification of documents and all internal processes
The registration for placement is open every quarter. The placement registration would be a one step process
and would begin within a week of the Last date for end quarter Grade submission (as mentioned in the
eMasters Academic Calendar). The registration window would be open for approximately 3 weeks.
A student will be “eligible to register for placement only if they have completed exams for required 12
modules and also any extra/repeat or substitute modules they plan to complete during the
programme.
A student will be “eligible for placementonly if they have completed 12 modules successfully, all requirements
for graduation, and his name is included in the graduation list.
2
In case the program for a registered student gets extended (due to receiving of an F/E grade or opting for
an extra module), the student must inform OOA, in writing, as soon as possible to deregister from the
current placement season and to be eligible for the subsequent placement season.
If a student wishes to register for placement after obtaining "No Dues Clearance" from the institute, however,
lacks access to the TS portal or an IITK email ID, they must send a request email to "odl_placement@iitk.ac.in"
from the alternate email address s/he provided during the eMasters admission process. The request email
should contain the student's Name, Roll number, IITK email ID and Programme details. In such cases, the
registration link will be provided, and the student will be able to do the registration through the alternate
email address (provided during the eMasters admission process).
Guidelines and application rules
The role of the OOA is of a facilitator and counselor for placement-related activities. OOA does NOT
guarantee a job.
OOA placement services are available to students for one year and one quarter after they register
for placement. Each quarter, an email listing the names of students registered for placement is
sent to the DPOC.
Applying for a company or joining a company is entirely the responsibility/decision of the
student concerned.
It will be the responsibility of the student to keep OOA informed about all communication with the
company.
OOA follows one student one job policy.
A student will be considered to have secured a job if his/her name is confirmed by a company.
The student cannot apply for any other company through OOA if OOA shares the salary range
and location for the job with the students prior to their job application.
When a student successfully secures employment or transition to a new job independently within
one year of graduation or when he is eligible for placement, it is imperative that the student
promptly informs OOA. In such a situation, the students are also requested to de- register
themselves from the placement to help their peers in the upcoming placement opportunities.
OOA actively supports placement-registered students in pursuing off-campus or lateral
placements, recognizing that working professionals often possess valuable networks. We kindly
urge students to keep OOA informed about such opportunities when applying. It may facilitate
any necessary referrals or verifications when required. This collaborative effort ensures a more
seamless and effective placement process for all parties.
If a student expresses interest in applying to a specific firm, we encourage them to share
their personal contact information with the OOA team within the company. Subsequently,
OOA may formally communicate with the company to introduce the programme. The referral may
be used with the consent of the student. This practice ensures transparency
in the
3
process.
If, during the process of contacting companies, OOA discovers that a student registered for
placement was extended a job offer through independent channels but opted not to accept it,
the student will be deemed ineligible for any future job opportunities within that particular
company through OOA placement. This measure is implemented to maintain a positive and
amicable relationship between OOA and the company in question.
In case a student receives multiple job offers (due to concurrent selection process by multiple
companies), he/she has to choose one of the jobs within ONE WEEK from the last intimation.
In addition, if a company has a job acceptance deadline, that needs to be honored too.
Once a student receives a job offer (whether verbal or written) with a minimum of a 20%
salary hike, they will be deregistered from the placement process, regardless of whether they
accept the offer. They will not be allowed to participate in any further placement activities.
If OOA does not have details about the salary or job location, and/or a minimum of a 20%
salary increase is not offered, OOA will allow the student up to two more interview opportunities.
The job opening created due to offer rejections (by students with multiple offers) will be filled
in from the selection waitlist if provided by the company.
Students waitlisted by a company can appear for other interviews unless their selection
confirmation is obtained from OOA. Policies for selected students (as detailed earlier) are
applicable to these students once their names are included in the selection list.
Once an offer letter is received from a company, students are required to confirm the offer within
ONE WEEK of receiving the offer letter or before the deadline mentioned by the company,
whichever is earlier.
Students are required to verify the job details (package, job profile, terms, and conditions,
etc.) prior to signing the offer letter.
Verifying the details is entirely the responsibility/decision of the student
concerned.
Any discrepancy observed should immediately be brought to the notice of OOA.
A signed acceptance letter should be handed over to OOA for documentation purposes.
Details of joining (date, location, etc.), if not mentioned in the joining letter, should be
communicated to OOA once the details are received from the company.
Students participating in placement activities must carry their Institute Identity Card/Alumni card (if
available, else contact OA office) and a Government Identity Card (Aadhar, PAN, Passport, Other ID
card requested by the company) with them at the time of any events scheduled by the company, such as
Pre-Placement-T alk (PPT)/Test/Group Discussion/ Interviews etc. and produce the same when asked by
the company representatives.
The students must follow company policies for any direct interaction (phone calls, email, through social
4
media, etc.) with the company officials prior to interview time. Any communication must be intimated
to OOA.
Any concerns or queries related to company-specific placements should be directed to the OOA Team, who
will clarify the details with the company officials.
Pre-Placement Talks (PPTs)
Some companies may schedule a PPT. Attending PPT, if given by a company, is mandatory for students who
have applied for a job opening in that company. The OOA will try to ensure that such PPTs are online.
Attendance of the participating students will be taken by the OOA, and a copy of that will be
handed over to the company for records.
Request for exemption can be sent to OOA by email, with proper reason.
Events (Written Test, Interview, GD etc.) if conducted in Offline/Online Mode
Some companies may conduct physical events to select the candidates.
Dress code for any Physical Interaction with the company
Shirt/T-Shirt with collar
Trousers /Jeans for Boys
Any formal attire/ Trousers (full pant)/ Jeans for Girls
Sandals/Shoes
**Flip flops (Bathroom/Rubber),
Crocs, etc. NOT permitted.
Any change in the dress code for any particular company will be informed by email.
Students must follow the schedule provided by the company.
Even if the event is conducted ONLINE, the students must follow the schedule and proper dress code.
Rules on submission of job applications
Students are advised to thoroughly check the profile and background of each company and make
informed decisions BEFORE applying to any company participating in the placements.
OOA will NOT be liable for any default from the company's end at any later stage.
Once a student applies to a company, all rules as per OOA student policy will be applicable.
Job applications for individual companies should be submitted only through OOA.
The student is responsible to check/meet all eligibility criteria which might be required at the time of
joining (academic, medical, etc.) for the opportunity he/she is applying for.
5
Ex-1. If a company requires the applicant to have a CPI of 8.0 at the time of joining, be well
assured before applying to that company.
Ex-2. If a company does not select candidates with a particular medical disability, please
ensure that you do not have that disability.
OOA supports the placement-registered students from going for off campus/lateral placements, as the
students being working professionals have their own network. We request students to keep OOA informed
of such opportunities to aid in any referrals/verifications if needed.
In case a student is interested in applying for a firm, they are encouraged to forward the personal contact
information they have in the company to the OOA team. OOA may formally write to the company to
introduce the programme. Proper reference of the source of interest will also be shared with the company
during this process after the student's consent.
Students engaging in off-campus/lateral placement mode and not following the rules can adversely affect
the relationship the Institute has built up with these companies and deter the companies from recruitment
process in the subsequent years. Similarly, students rejecting offers without informing the company,
delayed intimation, or job-hopping will adversely affect the placement for the subsequent batches. Hence,
OOA strongly recommends following the placement rules/conduct ethics suitable for working
professionals.
In case of continued violations of the above guidelines by a student, the student will be blacklisted
from the placement activities, and companies will be informed.
Lateral Placement Process
OOA encourages companies and students to go for Lateral Placement Process. The OOA Placement process is a
student driven process. Actively engaging with peers and leveraging your network is strongly recommended to
identify suitable positions, whether within your current company or amongst your connections. Students who contribute
to the placement success of their peers receive special recognition as "Esteemed eMasters Alumni" in various
publications of OOA such as websites and annual report, acknowledging their valuable contributions to creating better
opportunities for their fellow students.
Rules and regulations on withdrawal of job applications
Students will not be allowed to withdraw a submitted job application AFTER the last day of the application
deadline mentioned by the company.
Once a student withdraws his application for a job profile offered by a company, the student will not be allowed
to re-apply to the same job opening.
If a student backs out of a job application (not appearing for PPT or interviews) after the last date of application,
all rules and regulations as mentioned in the disciplinary actions section will be levied.
Post-Selection Joining Policy
In case a student is not willing to join the company for any other reasons (after accepting the offer), he/she
should inform both the company and OOA at the earliest.
6
Student conduct and disciplinary actions
Cheating attempt in all forms during the selection process (PPTs, written exams, group discussions, interviews,
interactions etc.) is a serious offense.
All students involved in these cases will be subject to disciplinary actions as per prevailing
rules of the Institute.
Students caught indulging in such activities would be debarred from the placement process
with immediate effect, and their registration will be canceled.
Also, note that no concessions in any form shall be provided in such a case.
Students are expected to behave with the companies in a professional and courteous manner. Ex.
Students should refrain from asking inappropriate questions during PPT or interview.
Students should not argue with the recruiters.
Students should maintain decorum even under provocation.
In case of any misbehavior on part of the recruiter during the interview process,
Please do NOT retaliate under any circumstance, even under provocation.
Please report the matter to OOA immediately.
If a student makes any false claims in a resume submitted for a job application
A job offer will be revoked in the case of a falsified resume was found after receiving a job
offer
Students involved will be deregistered from placements with immediate effect.
Further disciplinary action as per the decision of the OOA will also be imposed on the
students.
In case of discrepancies, all decisions taken by Professor in Charge, OOA would be final and will not
be revoked under any circumstances.
Any student found to have breached any of these rules will be debarred from the placement process. If, at
the time of the breach, the student is already placed, the company in which he/she is placed will be
intimated of the violation.
Guidelines for Master Resume
Master resume will NOT be sent to the company. OOA usually shares the 2-page short resume with the company.
If needed, students would need to share a short resume, in a different format based on the requirement of the
company, with OOA. However, any resume shared with the company must be a subset of the master resume.
It will contain the complete profile of the student. There is NO bar on the length of the master resume, but
7
each and every point will need verification.
One cannot add/change any point/sub-point that is written in the master resume while making his/her resume
for the company.
One is allowed to delete point(s)/sub-point(s) that is written in the master resume while making his/her resume
for the company.
If it is needed to state a point in a different way for the technical and non-technical profile, it is suggested
to include it in both the way in the master resume itself, even if it causes repetition.
Any change in the master resume MUST be done with the permission of OOA; Any sort of exaggeration in
one/two page resumes as compared to master resumes is not allowed and would be considered as a false claim.
Guidelines for Short Resume
The short resume must be a subset of the master resume.
A standard format of the resume and a detailed document “Detailed Format of the Resume" on how to make
the short Resume would be provided as a link to the students during registration
The resume must follow the specifications provided in the "Detailed Format of the Resume," including font
type, size, and style.
Personal details such as your name, email ID, address, photo, or mobile number are not to be mentioned in
the resume.
The short resume would be maximum of two pages in length.
Not conforming to the specified format or length exceeding 2 pages will lead to disqualification from
consideration for the current session.
